From Complete Beginner to Professional

You do not need to be an experienced rider to join the programme. We work with candidates from their first experience of the sport through to professional instructor development. Your progression follows three broad stages:

1

Become the Rider

Complete beginners start with the fundamentals, developing independence, control, technical ability and an understanding of equipment, weather and conditions.

Existing riders enter this process further along. As your ability develops, we introduce the higher-level riding, safety and rescue skills relevant to professional instructor development.

The objective is not simply to accumulate lesson hours. It is to develop the competence required to move to the next stage.

2

Become the Instructor

Being able to ride does not necessarily mean you can teach. Once you are ready, the focus shifts towards developing somebody else’s skills. This can include:

  • Teaching methodology
  • Demonstration and communication
  • Student management
  • Safety and risk management
  • Weather, tides and site assessment
  • Rescue techniques
  • Equipment management
  • Lesson planning
  • Professional conduct
  • Session organisation
  • Working with different student abilities

Where appropriate, you may also work alongside experienced Get Kiteboarding instructors during genuine customer lessons.

3

Progress to Professional Qualification

Once you have developed the competencies required for your chosen pathway, we will support your progression into the relevant external professional training. Depending on your programme, this can include:

  • RYA First Aid
  • RYA Powerboat Level 2
  • IKO Assistant Training
  • IKO Instructor Training
  • IWO Instructor Training

These courses and qualifications are delivered, assessed and/or awarded by their respective external organisations and training centres. Certification remains subject to their current entry requirements, course availability and successful completion of the relevant training and assessment.

Get Kiteboarding prepares you for the professional pathway. Final certification remains the decision of the relevant external training or awarding organisation.

How Your Professional Development Works

Your included development time is not restricted to traditional private lessons.

Depending on your level and objectives, it may involve:

  • One-to-one coaching
  • Training alongside other trainee instructors
  • Participation in suitable Get Kiteboarding customer lessons
  • Group sessions
  • Lesson observation
  • Assisting an instructor
  • Demonstrating techniques
  • Coaching under supervision
  • Rescue development
  • Professional mentoring

Where a group or customer session forms part of your professional development, the time you spend within that session counts towards your included allocation.

The 20 hours per discipline represent professional development time rather than exclusively private one-to-one tuition.

This approach develops you as both a rider and an instructor, rather than simply providing a block of private lessons.

A Programme Built Around You

There is no single training formula that works for everybody.

A complete beginner may require more personal riding development, while an experienced rider may need more work on teaching, rescue, communication or professional practice.

Your development time is therefore allocated according to what you need to progress, rather than requiring every candidate to complete the same sequence of lessons.

Competency — Not Clock-Watching

If you reach the required standard quickly, we will move you into the next appropriate stage rather than requiring unnecessary lessons simply to use your allocation.

Remaining development time may be used for teaching practice, supervised instruction, rescue work, mentoring or other relevant professional development.

The programme is sold as an integrated professional development pathway rather than individual lessons purchased by the hour.

Real Teaching Experience

As your competence develops, you may have opportunities to work alongside Get Kiteboarding during genuine customer lessons where appropriate.

You may initially observe how experienced instructors manage and structure sessions, then assist, demonstrate and coach before delivering appropriate elements under supervision.

By the time you attend your professional instructor training, teaching should not be completely new to you.

More Than an Instructor Certificate

Our objective is to help develop instructors who can operate confidently, safely and professionally within a watersports environment. The pathway can include:

RYA First Aid

Practical first-aid knowledge relevant to working around sport and the water.

RYA Powerboat Level 2

Practical powerboat handling skills that can be valuable when working at watersports centres in the UK and overseas.

Teaching Experience

Progressive experience working alongside professional instructors and genuine students.

Safety and Rescue

An understanding of managing students, equipment, conditions and emergencies.

Professional Mentoring

Support and guidance throughout your development towards becoming an instructor.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Complete beginners can join the programme and start by developing their riding skills.

If you already have experience, we will identify the areas you need to develop and begin at the appropriate stage.

No. You do not need to pass an entrance assessment before enrolling.

After enrolment, we will arrange your initial Training & Development Review to establish your current riding ability, knowledge, safety awareness and previous experience.

Not necessarily.

Your development may be delivered one-to-one, alongside other trainee instructors or within suitable Get Kiteboarding customer lessons and group sessions.

The included hours represent professional development time rather than exclusively private one-to-one tuition.

Twenty hours per discipline is the Get Kiteboarding professional development allocation included within the relevant programme.

It is not a guarantee that every candidate will reach the entry standard required by an external professional organisation within that allocation.

Complete beginners may require additional riding development before progressing into professional instructor training.

If further development is required, additional sessions can be arranged at our preferential Trainee Instructor Rate. We will discuss any recommended additional development with you as your programme progresses.

If you are ready to progress, we will progress you.

Remaining development time may be used for additional coaching, rescue development, supervised teaching, lesson observation, mentoring or other relevant professional development.

Unused development hours do not have a separate cash value because you are purchasing an integrated professional development programme rather than a package of individual lessons.

Your previous experience, progression, availability, chosen discipline, weather, tides and external course availability will all influence how quickly you develop.

An experienced rider may progress into instructor development relatively quickly, while a complete beginner will naturally spend longer developing personal riding skills.

Candidates should normally aim to complete their development and external pathway within 24 months of enrolment.

Training locations are determined by the activity, conditions, weather and tides.

Locations may include Bracklesham Bay, Chichester Harbour, Pagham or another suitable location selected by your instructor.

No.

External courses and qualifications are delivered, assessed and/or awarded by independent organisations and training centres.

Successful completion of the Get Kiteboarding programme does not itself award an IKO, IWO or RYA qualification. Certification remains subject to the relevant organisation’s current requirements and successful completion of its training and assessment.

Your programme includes one funded attempt at the specified external professional training.

If you are unsuccessful and need to repeat an external course, assessment or module, the cost of that repeat course or assessment is your responsibility.

Unless specifically confirmed otherwise in writing, travel, accommodation, food and other personal expenses associated with external courses are not included.
